🔊 How to Read the Romanisation

Every entry in this guide uses Revised Romanisation. These shortcut rules will help you read the italic pronunciations correctly.

Vowels — The Key to Getting It Right

VowelHangulEnglish equivalentExample from this guide
eou in "up" (NOT "ee-o") = seo = "suh"
aea in "cat" (NOT "ay-ee") = bae = "ba" as in "bat"
euoo in "book" but with lips spread = eu = lips flat, say "oo"
oo in "go" — mouth rounded = o = "oh"
uoo in "boot" = u = "oo"
aa in "father" = a = "ah"
iee in "see" = i = "ee"
yeoy + eo = "yuh" = yeo = "yuh"
oewe in "wet" = oe = "we"
uieu + i quickly = "uui" = ui = "uui"

Consonants

ㄹ (r/l) — Somewhere between R and L. Start of word → L. Between vowels → tapped R (like "butter" in American English). e.g. 라면 = ra-myeon (L-myeon), 서울 = seo-ul (suh-ool).
ㅂ (b/p) — Not quite B, not quite P. Between vowels it softens toward B. e.g. 비빔밥 = bi-bim-bap.
ㄱ (g/k) — Start of word → closer to K. Between vowels → softer like G. e.g. = gu (goo).
Double consonants (ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ, ㅉ) — Say the single version but tense and sharp, like you're holding your breath. Written as kk, tt, pp, ss, jj. e.g. 깎아 주세요 = kka-kka ju-se-yo — sharp and clipped.
Batchim (받침) — A consonant at the bottom of a syllable is clipped short. e.g. = mul (L is very light, almost "mu-l"). 맛있어요 = ma-si-sseo-yo (the ㅅ at the end of 맛 carries over to the next syllable).
Final ㅅ, ㅆ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅌ, ㅎ — All become a t sound at syllable end. e.g. = mat (not mas), = bit.
ㄴ + ㄹ → ㄹ + ㄹ — When ㄴ meets ㄹ, both become ㄹ. e.g. 곤란 = gol-lan (not gon-lan). You'll see this in 안녕 (annyeong → an-nyeong, because ㄴ shifts the ㄴ-ㅇ boundary).
